September is national preparedness month, and is promoted by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Learned from previous natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina, is waiting for someone to ensure you are not the best strategy to survive from large-scale emergency situations. A need to plan, prepare and stay alert in anticipation of storms and events to be self dependent and safe.
Planning can start making a list of the needs and wishes that you would like to have on hand in the event of an emergency situation. You should also plan on or you will remain in your home and the event from weather or if you need to evacuate to another location more secure. Both options will depend on your location, the size of the event, the survivability of your structure and the lifetime of the emergency situation. If you plan on staying at your current location, you need to plan to have enough resources such as drinking water and non-perishable food to last for several weeks at a minimum. It is recommended that each person at least one litre of drinking water per day and at least 2,500 calories per day in easily prepared survival food.
Other considerations to include in your plan are the safety of your location, adequate shelter and heat or cooling, depending on the time of the year. Safety, the protection of the emergency situation and potential of everyone who might want to do you harm. You accommodation must secure enough to protect you against the elements and to protect your gear survival of get lost or stolen. And in extreme weather conditions, you should be able to retain enough heat in the winter and cool in the summer to survive the event with from health problems such as hypothermia or heat stroke.
